History of the Museum
The Khakas National Museum of Local Lore, founded on a voluntary basis in 1929 at the district department of public education, received the status of state museum on the basis of Decree No. 16 dated July 29, 1931 by the Presidium of the Khakas Regional Executive Committee. Since the museum was started, the special attention has been paid to the ethnography of the Khakas people of the XIXth century and archeology. In the 40-70s of the XXth century, the museum's collection was significantly replenished due to the initiation of archaeological and ethnographic expeditions, the most active part in which was taken by the museum head Albert Nikolaevich Lipsky, historian Leonid Romanovich Kyzlasov, archaeologist Era Antonovna Sevostyanova and other scientists. In 2015, the museum moved to a specially designed and built building of the Republican Museum and Cultural Center. The total area of the building is 30.000 sq.m. The architecture of the building is made in the form of a circle; in addition to the museum, it houses the Ministry of Culture of Khakassia, the Tourist Information Center, and a stage space is being prepared for opening
Archaeological and ethnographic collection
At the moment, the museum has several thematic collections, numbering more than 140,000 exhibits. The main collection, which righty occupies a central place, is a collection of the ancient Yenisei menhirs - stone steles up to 6 meters high. In total, more than 400 ancient Yenisei sculptures are known in the world, our museum has the most significant collection of them - more than 60. They are different in size and exterior, but the images and symbols made on these monuments of ancient art speak of the established and complex religious worldview of the population of the Middle Yenisei during the Early Bronze Age four millennia ago.
The museum collection contains the rarest examples of objects of the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages, ancient jewelry and weapons, as well as bronze products of the Scythian-Siberian animal style, Tashtyk burial masks made of clay and plaster in the I-Vcc. AD, pottery from the Eneolithic era to the Middle Ages. The hall presents drawings on rocks - petroglyphs of various eras, copies of rock paintings made by the famous artist Vladimir Kapelko, as well as monuments of the ancient Turkic runic writing.
Art History Collection
In addition to the rich collections of antiquities, the Khakas Museum has a collection of art objects collected by the sculptor I.N. Karachakova-Kartina and donated to the museum. There are about 2000 items in the collection. These are the own works of Karachakova-Kartina, her personal items, documents and letters, books, art postcards, sculptures, engravings and drawings, paintings by Russian and Western European artists, objects of arts and crafts, art furniture of the XVIII-XIX centuries, photographic negatives.
Even the Hermitage could envy this collection. See for yourself, in the museum's collection there are two tapestries that belong to the series "Months of Luke" (February, March) of the ninth repetition, made in 1737-1740yy. by the French weaver Michel Odran at the Tapestry Manufactory and the creations of the XVth-century by Italian sculptors Desiderio ("The Christ Child") and Verrocchio ("Cupid with a Dolphin" and a copy of Michelangelo's sculpture "David").
Permanent expositions
A large part of the museum's exposition is devoted to Khakas ethnography, the Fauna of Khakassia, the tribute to Khakassia's participation in the Great Patriotic War, the tribute to the scientist-historian Leonid Romanovich Kyzlasov. Temporary exhibition projects of Russian museums are also regularly exhibited here. It also hosts public events.

Events at the museum
Warm meetings - February. One of the favorite events of the town residents, dedicated to handicraft, creativity and self-development. Workshops and creative performances alternate with a fair. There is a “warm” dress code for visitors - handmade knitwear
Night of Museums – 18th of May. The largest museum of Khakassia opens its doors and funds during the days of the all-Russian event - the night of museums, and invites authors and viewers to competitions, museum workshops, shows and presentations
Kyzlasov Readings - October. One of the largest scientific events dedicated to the study of historical problems. Both high school students and distinguished scientists moving science forward can take part in this event.
Night of the Arts – 3rd of November. The museum and cultural center hosts events in all types of arts - film exhibition, arts and crafts, conceptual art, music, art, dance. Collected under one roof in one place, the arts inspire and give an understanding of the depth of aesthetic view of the world.
Christmas Tree - December-January. The museum does not keep out off the children's favorite holiday. Accompanied by Father Christmas and the Snow Maiden, the Museum hosts a colorful New Year's party for children, accompanied by quests, quizzes and games.
